Bayern's Title Hopes Fade
Heidenheim Stun Bavarians 3-2
Munich, Germany - Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title hopes suffered a major setback on Saturday as they squandered a two-goal lead to slump to a shock 3-2 loss at Heidenheim.
The Bavarians took an early advantage through goals from Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané, but Heidenheim fought back in the second half with strikes from Florian Niederlechner, Tim Kleindienst, and Christian Kühlwetter. The win puts Heidenheim into contention for a Europa League spot, while Bayern's title chances now hang by a thread.
Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann was left to rue his side's missed opportunities, particularly in the first half. "We were very dominant in the first half and should have scored more goals," he said. "But we made too many mistakes in the second half and it cost us the game."
The loss leaves Bayern six points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen with just four games remaining. Leverkusen can effectively wrap up the title with a win over Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.
For Heidenheim, the victory was a historic achievement. It marked the first time they had ever beaten Bayern in a competitive match.
