Mississippi State Football Head Coach Zach Arnett Relieved of Duties
Former Defensive Coordinator Promoted to Role in 2021
Mississippi State University recently announced a major change within its football program. Head football coach Zach Arnett has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately. Defensive coordinator Arnett was initially promoted to the head coaching position on a permanent basis in 2021.
The decision to part ways with Arnett follows a disappointing 2022 season in which the Bulldogs finished with a 6-7 record, including a 3-5 record in SEC play. The season concluded with a 24-22 loss to Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen expressed his appreciation for Arnett's contributions to the program but acknowledged that the team's performance fell short of expectations. The university has not yet announced a replacement for Arnett.
Arnett's departure marks the end of a two-year tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs. He previously served as the defensive coordinator for three seasons before being promoted to the top position. During his time in Starkville, Arnett led the Bulldogs to a 9-6 record in 2021, including a victory in the Armed Forces Bowl.
The search for Mississippi State's next head football coach is expected to begin immediately. The school is likely to consider both internal and external candidates for the position.
