Developer launches Indigenous Land Use Agreement with local Whadjuk people

Work to start on site to make way for 350 home development

The old Carlisle's Tribe site on the corner of McDowell and Walcott Street in East Perth will be dismantled this week as part of the $80 million redevelopment of the area into a 350 home development.

Developer ICD Property said work would start on site to remove the existing structures, including the old Carlisle's Tribe building, cottages and sheds.

The site, known as Queens Riverside, was purchased by ICD Property in 2019 for $20 million and will comprise 350 apartments across four buildings, including affordable housing options, as well as retail, commercial and public open space.

ICD Property managing director Matthew McNeilly said the development had been designed to reflect the site's unique heritage while also creating a vibrant new community.

"We are committed to working with the local Whadjuk people to ensure that the development is respectful of the site's cultural significance," he said.

The Whadjuk people are the traditional owners of the land on which the site is located.

ICD Property has entered into an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Whadjuk people, which will see the developer provide financial and other support to the Whadjuk community.

The agreement also includes a commitment to cultural awareness training for all workers on the site and the creation of a permanent artwork by a Whadjuk artist.

The dismantling of the old Carlisle's Tribe site is expected to take several weeks.

Construction of the new development is expected to start in early 2023 and be completed in 2025.
